Reflection: Potent Biology: Stem Cells, Cloning and Regeneration

                     
The video by Douglas Melton is on the subject of stem cells, one of the medical subjects that elicit significant opinions and unending debates. The likelihood of regeneration of tissues as well as organs via the use of stem cells and cloning encompasses one of the most controversially debated topics in the medical world. Some of the issues addressed on the subject encompass the assessment of the issues as the difference between regeneration and healing of the wound in addition to the assessment of the type of diseases that can be cured via the use of stem cells. Further, the issue of whether cloning increases the risk of acquiring cancer as a result of the differentiation of cells that are already differentiated is addressed. In this question Dr. Melton argues that the assertion is entirely true as although cancer encompasses the reprogramming of cells, there is no evidence to support the argument at the moment.
On the issue of the issues that characterize degenerative diseases, he starts by saying that these diseases encompass the afflictions that affect people due to the aging of the bodies including diseases as Alzheimer, ALS, and Lou Gehrig’s among others. These diseases are not as a result of the defect in a single cell but result from a multitude of numerous genes that are combined in making the patient susceptible to acquiring the disease and that they encompass interactions with the environments. Overall, it was evident that there are diverse environments elements that lead to the eventual progression of the disease. In the case of the pancreas where the insulin-producing beta cells are lost, an embryonic cell can be used in making a specialized cell type as a means of replacing it in the patients with the missing or defective cell.
The study of degenerative diseases is a complex issue because it encompasses complex genetic disorders is not as a result of a single gene but a multitude of others that result in the defect. Looking at this video makes is clear that it is an excellent educative material used by Dr. Melton. Among the most evident attributes is the fact that it is greatly interactive, allowing the audience to ask questions and clarifications that increase its effectiveness. Additionally, the use of video animations allows the audience to make sense of the issues that are being discussed and related to what is being addressed by Dr. Melton, increasing the ease with which they make sense of the content.
