Cause or Effect on Historical Event

The historical event selected for this essay is on the causes of the Arab Spring uprisings and the impact that these uprisings had on the rights of women in the Arab nations. The Arab Spring refers to the series of antigovernment protests, armed rebellions and uprisings that spread across the Middle East in 2010. The term Arab Spring became popular after the success uprisings that occurred in Tunisia in early 2011 against their former leader EL Abidine Ben Ali, encompassing the same anti-government protests that took place in most of the Arab countries. Although the Arab spring was not a gender based issue, it becomes evident that the subject of women's rights was at the core as it tried to meet the definition of the 'West.'  The Arab spring marked a significant turning point for the women in the Arab nations, about the role exhibited by women in the public space as well as the advent of women in the face of the protests, a significant change of dynamics.
The causes of the Arab Spring
The assessment of the internal causes leads to the assertion of the fact that any revolt is a byproduct of many events that have the likelihood of completely changing the nature of the society as well as its political life. In the case of Egypt, the massive income gap during the error of Mubarak was one of the main issues that led to the original uprising. The fast rise in the food prices further contributed to the destabilization of the sociopolitical systems in these countries (Howard & Hussain, 2013).
The issue of unemployment is the additional attribute that led to the emergence of the Arab uprisings since it was a major source of economic insecurity and destabilization of any political system. The fact that the young people in this region could not find jobs led to a rise of a huge population of the young and jobless population, with the fact that the countries were not doing anything to change the situation making the situation worse. The additional issue of poor political systems in the Arab region characterized by high levels of corruption, state of emergency laws, lack of freedom of speech as well as religious fundamentalism and lack of free elections exacerbated the situation (Howard & Hussain, 2013). 
The role of technology and social media was additionally a player in the spread of these uprisings as it was a core mode of communication that facilitated the communication between the protestors (Howard & Hussain, 2013). As a way of managing the situation, the governments of Tunisia and Egypt shut down the Internet during the protests.
Among the main women issues that became evident during the Arab spring is the fact it served as a highlight for the women rights, showcasing how it is possible to develop a new political identity through the inclusion of women. The spring served as a platform that the women could use in amplifying their demands relating to a better future for themselves, their families and their countries, in addition to their demand to end injustice, corruption, and brutality (Johansson-Nogués, 2013).  The Arab spring further presented the women with a platform they could use in making their rights felt through the formation of organizations that could be used in airing their views. Overall, the women had an opportunity to challenge the old patriarchal dominance that has served to deny them opportunities to advance their rights and social-economic development (Johansson-Nogués, 2013).
