THE LABOR ABUSES BEHIND WHAT WE EAT


 Summary
            The article is about the fundamental rights of the people whose work is food parking. The article says that these people should be treated with dignity and fairness. The article says that regarding the rights of these employees they have come from very far. According to the article, one cannot think of the food when thinking about the globalized economy. The food system and the industry have been shaped by capital mobility and some of the legal framework. These are the forces which have transformed ways and places the food is produced, the people growing it, and its effects on the ecosystem. The article explains that since these workers play a great role in the production of food, they should be treated with some forms of dignity because without them the food industry would not have been where it is (Loomis, 2015). 

Response to the Article
            Though it does not look like it, one cannot think about the globalized economy without thinking about the food industry. However, the most important thing here is the capital mobility and legal framework which facilitate the food industry. What I find fascinating about the article is that besides the employees, there are some forces which have greatly transformed ways and places the food is produced, the people growing it, and its effects on the ecosystem. Additionally, it is fascinating to see that Mexico has been transformed by the NAFTA’s agricultural provisions allowing farmers in the United States to easily sell their products on the Mexican market while raising their animals by feeding them on cheap corn from America (Loomis, 2015).
            The number one strength of the article is the explanation and discussion of ways in which American helped in building Mexico through free movement of the people who are employed in the industries. While this might have been seen as a step backward, it has greatly shaped ways in which Mexico looks like today. One of the weaknesses of the article is that it does not highlight the laws limiting public scrutiny of the places where food is processed. What I find fascinating is that it would have been wise if the article was to highlight some of the laws that have hindered ways in which public accesses places in which food is produced. Additionally, it would have been better if it highlighted the plight and conditions of some of these places.
Reasons for Choosing the Article
            This article has been chosen because of various reasons. One of the reasons is highlighting the importance of the food industry in ensuring that the economy is globalized. The food industry has played a great role, and it is still playing in ensuring there is there is food in the markets for the rest of the industries. Additionally, the article highlights the importance of food and ways in which it has led to the growth of other industries while not being given the coverage it should be having.
            The article shows the role that America has played in creating the economy of Mexico. However, while that might seem the case, the food industry should be respected and allowed to flourish by providing the required and the necessary materials and coming up with laws that will aid in thriving the economy of the food industry. Additionally, reasons, why I chose the article, is because the food industry sometimes has been left in deplorable conditions which affect the working conditions of the people (Loomis, 2015).
