Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, I am corresponding to you about the current upsurge witnessed the increase in the case of divorce. More so the emphasis is on the impact that the divorces are having on the wellbeing of the children involved, both physically as well as emotionally. Some time back there was a column in your newspaper [posing the question whether divorce is good to the children. The fact is that the issues that normally lead to the parents deciding to commence are major and in most cases are irreconcilable. However, it is the children who normally bear the brunt of these divorce. The situation is better in the cases whereby the children are older as they can understand the reasons but the cases where the children are young receive worst effects.

Most of these impacts that the children suffer from are physical as they cannot understand why they one of the parents has to move from their home. These children normally go through so much emotional turmoil as they try to comprehend the situation. On the other hand, most of the children feel that they are the reason as to why the parents cannot live together anymore. In these cases, some of the children as attempted suicide to run away from the reality. The common case that runs through my mind in most cases is when my best friend’s parents decided to divorce. My friend has to be rushed to the emergency ward after the mother found him unconscious with both of his wrists having been slit. Once released from the hospital, depression kicked, with his grades plummeting to the floor. The fact that the frequency of divorces in the America is the increases implies that more and more children are going to go through these trying moments. The first issue that is going to be on the rise is the number of depressed children in the American schools. As a result, the issues to do with the bad grades are consequently going to cripple the academic system as the children cannot concentrate in their classes.

The fact that the current society is not sure on whether the divorce aspect is a good or bad thing underscores the gravity of the problem. The assessment of the bad effects it has on the children should be enough to make everyone talk about it and ensure that these parents address the situation adequately. The introduction of marital counseling services that are free for all the couples needing them will be instrumental in changing this trend. The common knowledge is that the facts that are causing these marital breakdowns are the small issues that have been let to accumulate. However, with these services avoidable and for free, more couples will have the expert advice on how to deal with their challenges. Additionally the school needs to introduce counseling serves tailored to meet the needs of these children. The fact that they feel isolated and unwanted is the main attribute that results in their depression. The religious leaders additionally should step in and offer their following with marital advice as well as the importance of walking in the light as it will guide the followers into being faithful to one another. Above all, the community leaders being the role models for these families and bringing together various stakeholders to emphasize the value of the family institution will assist in reinforcing these relationships.
