The speaker reflected on

            The speaker that I am reflecting on is Sheila Johnson. She is a successful entrepreneur as well as a philanthropist.  She is not only the founding partner of Black Entertainment Television (BET) but also the founder and CEO of Salamander Hotels and Resorts. Sheila Johnson remains the only African-American woman to have ownership in three professional sports teams.  Outside of her entrepreneurial spirit, she is also an ambassador for the arts and global poverty.

Major themes and topics from the speaker

            The major themes I took from the speaker are passion, determination and courage.  They depict from three topics in her life. When Sheila was a music teacher, she took it as the foundation of her life. Sheila thought that she would teach music for her entire life. After realizing that she wasn’t able to continue living off of the few dollars she earned, she decided to seek greener pastures. The theme portrayed here is passion. She loved her work and did it to the fullest. It shows that people need to like what they are doing at the present, but they need to expand the ideas to go up the ladder.

            The second major topic is When she made BET TV channel and later got divorced and selling it. The major theme she illustrates is determination. Her husband was working with an individual who needed a channel aiming senior citizens. He did not get the funding which made him frustrated and threw the proposal in trash. Sheila read over it. She crossed out senior citizen and wrote black in there.  It showed that there many possibilities in entrepreneurship as long as one is determined. She also realized that she was not getting any credit for everything that she had accomplished, like BET. Sheila encourages us to reach our goals and not to allow anyone to distract us from our path.

            While building Salamander Resorts, the theme of courage is portrayed. Sheila faced a lot of opposition as well as intimidation. She faced a lot of racism from people surrounding the area.  They hanged posters and directed racially charged comments toward Sheila. She did not let the adversity stop her. It shows that whenever we want to pursue our dreams, we should stop feeling cowardice fro threats and intimidations from opponents.

Use of some of these themes and topics in life (school, personal, social)

            In my personal life, these themes can be critical to help me achieve my dreams. Passion can help me to develop positive attitudes towards learning. It can help me handle issues that I may perceive difficult.  It can help me in eliminating discouragements in dealing with issues.

            Determination, on the other hand, can help me stick to my goals at school. It can also be of great importance since it prevents deviation objective route. Courage as a theme can help me pursue challenges that my face me both in school as well as in the society. It can help me pursue my goals without fearing intimidations.

Recommending someone going and seeing this speaker

             I strongly recommend any person with a dream to succeed to see this speaker. She is a great resource for people who face challenges which hinder their development.  She is one person with first-hand experience and her story as well as advice can change much struggling with pursuing their goals.  The speaker does not only provide moral courage but also opens up minds of people to pursue their dreams.
