Why was the atomic bomb developed?
The development
of the atomic bomb was as a result of action and reaction on the allied powers
that were fighting against the USA in World War II. It was revealed in 1939
that Germany government was working secretly with Uranium with an aim of
developing atomic weapons. Roosevelt, the then president of the US, formed a
committee known as the Uranium Committee to develop atomic weapons because they
feared Japan and Germany would develop and use the atomic weapons against the
US and her allies (Weinstocks, 2010).
What reasons are given for the use
of these bombs in WWII?
One of the
reasons that were used to justify the use of atomic bombs in the Second World
War was that countries had lost a lot through the war, and so they wanted to
reiterate for the loss they had incurred through the war. America wanted to end
the World War II, and so they had to develop the atomic bomb so that after the
destruction the opponents would stop the fight and seek for peace. It seemed to
work. The other reason for the use of such weapons is to counter the other
weapons being used by then enemies. Each
of the parties involved in fighting in World War used sophisticated weapons and
so it was necessary for a country to try and outdo the other, thus leading to
the use of atomic bombs.
What were the results of these
bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
The death toll
in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the bombing was very high. The bomb destroyed 5
square miles of the Hiroshima city and also, 63 percent of the buildings in
that city got destroyed while nearly 92 percent of structures suffered
destruction or damage either by the blast or the fire (Hasegawa, 2007). In Hiroshima, the estimated death tolls
amounted to 180, 000 in a population of around 350,000 people. In Nagasaki, the
bomb destroyed 27 percent of the buildings while the death toll was estimated
to be 100,000 (Poolos, 2008). Nothing was left standing as the bomb dropped on
Nagasaki was more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima.
In your opinion was the use of these
bombs by the United States justified?
Based on the
reliable testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders, Japan was to surrender
because they had made consultations with the Soviets Union (Bernstein,
1999). Even if the bombing were not to
be done, Japan would have surrendered. I
also think that the use of such a barbarous weapon on Japan was of no
substantial help to the war against Japan. Japan had already been defeated, and
they were ready to give up on fighting due to the effective sea blockade and the
bombings of conventional weapons. Therefore, USA was not justified to sue such
a perilous weapon.
Would there ever be any legitimate
reason for using much larger nuclear weapons by a country in the future?
Based on the
destruction caused by the atomic bomb and the lives of many people that the
weapon claimed, such weapons or much larger nuclear weapons should never be
used. It is apparent that war can never
be useful; in making for peace. There
are more useful ways of resolving conflicts among nations or warring parties
instead of using such dangerous weapons.
