Topic 1
The health content areas that school
health curriculum should focus on includes healthy eating, personal health and
wellness, sexual health, mental and emotional health, and physical activity
(Donna & David 2015). These are some of the important areas that the school
should include in its curriculum. As the health care profession, so as to get
the school administrator to support the health program, I will start by
explaining the importance of the health program. Indicating how the health
program will benefit the students through building student’s skills, knowledge,
and a positive attitude can be a major issue that will motivate the
administration to support the program. The school administration always wants
to ensure that students are in an environment that will help them perform well
in their academics; therefore, as a health care professional, highlighting some
of the benefits that students will gain from the health program can be a factor
that will motive the administrators to provide its support.
Topic 2
Child maltreatment refers to the neglect
and abuse that occurs in children who are under 18 years old. It includes all
types of emotional and physical ill-treatment such as negligence, neglect, sexual
abuse, and other exploitation that can lead to actual or potential harm to the
survival, development, health, or dignity of the child. Child maltreatment has
a negative impact on health as abused children can suffer physical injuries
such as bruises, broken bones, cuts, and burns (Perrin & Miller-Perrin
2007). Some of the ways that can be used so as to reduce the prevalence of
child maltreatment in the community are through teaching parents how to create
good parent-child relationships. The public health and also teachers may teach
positive parenting skills such as appropriate discipline, good communication,
and responding to the emotional and the physical needs of children (Perrin
& Miller-Perrin 2007). The school can help to prevent maltreatment by making
sure that it has a policy on how students will be disciplined. In doing this,
it ensures that teachers do not go to the extent of causing harm to the student
in the name of discipline. The public health can help by having a program to
prevent child sexual abuse that will be delivered in schools.
Topic 3
The YRBSS tend to monitor six types of
health-risk behaviors that do contribute to causes of death and disability
among adults and youths. Some of the behaviors include tobacco use, inadequate
physical activity, alcohol and drug abuse, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and
sexual behaviors that may lead to STDs and unintended pregnancy (CDC 2016).
Schools tend to play a significant role in the promotion of health and safety
of the young people and also in helping them to establish lifelong healthy
behaviors. In schools, students can learn about some of the dangers of
unhealthy behaviors focus on practicing skills that do promote a healthy
lifestyle. The government can work on providing funding for some of the interventions
programs aimed at educating students about healthy behaviors. For instance,
some programs can be implemented in schools that will focus on educating
students about the dangers of drug abuse, healthy dietary and sexual behaviors.
In regards to healthy dietary behaviors, the schools can hold meetings where
they will educate parents about the importance of ensuring healthy diets and
why it is important for children to engage in physical activity.
