How do you see healthcare reform
affecting the role of the nurse educator?
With the reforms, there is a huge impact on nurse
educator in that the U.S. will need to train additional healthcare providers to
manage millions of new patient’s influx in the healthcare arena (Fried,
Pintor, Graven & Blewett, 2014)..
Another impact will be an increased need for the federal government to provide
more funds for advanced practice as well as undergraduate registered nursing
education. For the advanced practice
education, the reforms are excellent news. Many programs need to be initiated
to increase the numbers of students in an effort to meet healthcare needs of
millions of patients. Reforms will also bring challenges to nurse educator in that
in an effort to ensure enough providers like medical doctors as well as
nurse practitioners (NP), healthcare plans will need to
recognize and reimburse the NPs
as main care providers.
Educational units will need to be prepared to increase
their enrollment to meet the demand.
Getting faculty with doctoral degrees to champion for this change will
become a challenge with capped salaries as well as retirements which are a
dilemma for the entire nursing education programs (Brett, Branstetter &
Wagner, 2014). The reforms will provide some opportunities in that many
professional-level organizations at national and state levels will work
together to ensure sufficient providers for the influx of patients. Need to
decrease restrictions to practice for all nurse practitioners will be a must.
The restrictions that may require immediate attention may include requiring
third-party carriers to recognize and reimburse the NPs as main care providers
to allow patients additional options for care delivery. As another effect on
nurse educator, there will be a need for revisions on restrictions on practice,
like medical collaboration requirements, in which NPs need to be overseen by
physicians (Kingsley, 2014).
