History
of Network
The world has
been on the demand for sharing the limited resources as well as the improvement
of the communication channels to replace the traditional human communications.
A network is described as a collection of different computers that is
interconnected by the defined communications channels to share resources and
information.
According to ICP
Networks (n.d), in the 1940s, George Stibitz was using a teletype machine to
send information. He used the machine to send a problem set instructions from a
model to a complex number calculator, and he could are the answers back to the
same mode. The model was situated within the Dartmouth College and the
calculator in New York. In the late
1950s, the mode of communication was implemented within some networks of the
communicating computers that used military radar system of Semi-Automatic
Ground Environment (SAGE). In 1962, there was the interest by the American
soldiers to link the output systems to computers and was implemented through
the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) under J.C.R. Licklider. The first
Wide Area Network (WAN) was created in 1965 by Thomas Marill and Lawrence
through the network technology of ARPANET. At the same time, a telephone switch
that applied the true computer control was established by the Western Electric.
In 1972, the X.25 technology was deployed that later resulted in the TCP/IP
networks. It was in 1991 when the Home Broadband was created and did well as it
could enter mainstream usage faster than the dial-up internet services. In the
late 90s, Napster application was developed to allow the free swapping of music
files and it applied the peer to peer network design technique. Apache was also
developed to incorporate the internetworking as its origins from the mere HTTP
that supports numerous new internet technologies such as the web services. We
have moved from the IPv4 to IPv5 and currently to IPv6 (Blackledge, 2014).
Requirements
for a network engineer
As a network
engineer, it requires that the person is in possession of some academic
qualification, professional qualification, and some desirable skills as well as
experience (Bernstein, Schaffzin &
Princeton Review (Firm), 2003). The most desirable qualification goes by the
individual being in possession of a degree in the field of computer science,
electrical and electronic engineering, physics, mathematics, network security
management, computer systems and networks and computer software or computer
systems engineering. At times, the diploma holders in computer studies, electrical
and electronic engineering and the software engineering are also eligible
candidates. The professional academic qualification certifications include the
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or the Cisco Certified Network
Professional (CCNP), the Microsoft Certified Systems Associate (MCSA) or the
Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE). Also, we have the CompTIA Network+
and the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE). One should be in possession of the, at
least, Microsoft, Cisco and Novell certification (Carthern, Wilson,
Bedwell & Rivera, 2015). The courses
are considered because they cover networking protocols of TCP/IP, HTTPs, VoIP,
and FTP and Bluetooth. They also have a clear and good consideration of data
transmission technologies such as the ISDN, ASDL, ATM and the wireless
communications. They also are candidates
equipped with the network security related applications such as the firewalls,
anti-viruses, and the virtual private network. The position of network
administrator does require some relevant working experience as it is quite
essential and beneficial to mastering the procedures of a given company. The
experience should are the network engineer appreciate the importance of
teamwork and the practical application of the end user systems.
Duties
and responsibilities of a network engineer
The network
engineer at times referred to as the network administrator have some designated
responsibilities of installation, configuration, service and repair of the
company computer data and communication systems. However, in a summary, the
following are some of the defined duties of a network engineer;
§
Ensuring
that new software and hardware are well installed and configured to are applied
within the network
§
Providing
network accessibility by creating user accounts, setting the user rights and
permissions for the accessibility to the network
§
Maintain
security of the network throughout by outdoing with the unauthorized accessing
of the network
§
Providing
the network technical support by finding the network faults and fixing them
§
Providing
technical support to the end users of the company network and at the same time
enhancing the preventive measures of the network
§
Providing
IT training to the business staff of the new applications and systems
§
Undertaking
normal day administration and network monitoring that describes maintenance of
the network
§
Planning
and enhancing the network development in support to the network manager
Proposal
Iteration
1: Planning
The iteration
operations will involve the undertaking of the step to familiarize me with the
company operations. At the same time, I will make sure that principles,
procedures and the core goals of the company are well understood before I move
to the development of the network. I will define the project that I will be
undertaking by providing the plan that will describe the major activities and
the anticipated outcomes prior the implementation of the project. At the end of
the phase, I would stand to smile at the experience of project planning in
respect to the documents I would have prepared.
Iteration
2: Defining network requirements
Planning is
identical to the provision of guidance on performing of the other follow-up
activities. I will conduct a feasibility study on the critical areas of the
company that is much in need of the establishment of the network. I will define
the requirements of the company to what the network should deliver. Upon
definition, I will conduct some interviews as well as conduct some meetings and
administer a questionnaire to the stakeholders and the end users of the
network. I will use the Tableau software to perform the analysis of the data
collected to sieve out the requirements. The technical requirements will be
defined and go by the definition of the network inventory list. After that, I
will be equipped with requirement definition that goes by data collection and
analysis.
Iteration
3: Designing the Network
The designing of
the network will go by the requirements defined in the previous iteration. At
the point, I will define the factors to are considered while designing the
network so as to have the development of the reliable and secure network. After
then I will provide the technical design of the network by providing the network
diagram to the company. The diagram will provide the guidance for implementing
the network on the ground. By accomplishing the task, I will have the
experience, skills and the knowledge of network designing and development.
Iteration
4: Network Administration and Management
The network
administration and maintenance come in after the network has begun operating.
The administration will involve in ensuring that the accessibility is
distributed accordingly. I will provide the technical support to the clients to
ensure the communication and the sharing of the resources are at accessible.
The maintenance goes by ensuring that the network is to accommodate all the
required end users without failing. The activities go by the network upgrading
and ensuring that it is secure and reliable.
