Research on Nature vs. Nurture

         Both nature and nurture influence human development. Aspects of behavioral development, cognitive development, and social development influence are by both the aspects of the environment and hereditary or genetic aspects (Fujita, 2000). For example, cognitive development is classified in psychology as an aspect of study under nurture versus nature schema since both have an impact (Ashcraft, 1998). The nurturing aspect looks at aspects of the environment. These factors can influence the neural pathways of the brain and the degree connection made. The effect of the environment can be both positive and negative. Reading is an approach to nurturing the brain that enhances the overall cognitive development (Modgil, 1987).

         The environmental aspects of the area of nurturing have more impact on various aspects of human development. A child from a family where parents abuse alcohol is also likely to use alcohol from an early age. Other aspects of intelligence, personality, and sexual identity are more inclined to environmental factors. It is only mental illness that has a link to genetic factors (nature).

         My belief in the strength of nurture more than nature will enable me emphasize on implementing policies that human shape behavior in the right direction (McGraw, 1995). For example alcohol and substance abuse prevention programs. In cases where the administrator believes that environmental factors are the cause of mental illness, he or he will consider policies that eliminate these stressors. For that administrator believing the opposite, he will not implement any policy relating to mental illness because he believes that the condition is genetic.
