Questions
1.
Despite the universality of the image of The
Spirit of 76, it was not synonymous with the concept of Americanism, and it
placed instant recognition to the Revolution iconography. It was not an art
with capital A. Thus; there is no local library on art history books that
mention the artists or this work (Pohl, 251). Archibald McNeal Willard
(1836-1918) work was immediately dismissed by various art critics to be more of
cartoons. However, despite this fact it, captured public imagination through
its fervent adulations and can be seen in modern day rock stars (Ohio History,
1992).
2. Augustine Dupre, The Diplomatic Medal, 1790
Augustine Dupre was a famous French engraver
who designed the Diplomatic Medal made of gold for displaying the motto of
commerce and peace under the meticulous instructions of Jefferson. From the
example above, we see the personification of a semi-naked Indian Queen, who
before the American. The gift symbolized the vision of peace that Jefferson had
through commerce between the Indians and Americans (Mendis, 179).
3. John Vanderlyn: The Murder of Jane McCrea,
1803-1804
It is true that the painting had a major
turning point of the war towards the British. It displays the tragic event that
Jane McCrea experienced as she headed to Canada (Atheneum, n.d). It is a
propagandistic painting that symbolizes the brutality of the enemy of the
colony of England. Venderlyn portrays the Indians as gentle spirits, quaint
curiosities and awestruck children of nature in this painting. The painting
became the first indigenous American history work to be accepted by the Paris
Salon in 1804. This work was sufficiently Dravidian in its anti-English
implication and composition that saw it win the academic approval (Vanderlyn,
1804).
