Despite the universality of the image of The Spirit of 76, it was not synonymous with the concept of Americanism, and it placed instant recognition to the Revolution iconography. It is a propagandistic painting that symbolizes the brutality of the enemy of the colony of England. Venderlyn portrays the Indians as gentle spirits, quaint curiosities and awestruck children of nature in this painting. The painting became the first indigenous American history work to be accepted by the Paris Salon in 1804. This work was sufficiently Dravidian in its anti-English implication and composition that saw it win the academic approval (Vanderlyn, 1804).
