In this case
study, Pat the assistant director of human resources is looking for the right
qualifications and personal traits for graduating seniors to fill the position
of credit analyst at the Central Bank. First, Pat focuses on identifying
potential candidates with strong interpersonal skills hence select confident
candidates who also show poise and initiative. Strong interpersonal skills are
not only suitable for the entry position but also for future leadership
positions in the bank because leadership requires strong interpersonal skills
to assist in building a relationship with others in an organization (Riggio
& Tan, 2013).
Two, Pat focuses on hiring graduates who possess proper
ethics. Ethics is a trait that is suitable for both entry and leadership positions.
Ethical leaders in an organization demonstrate moral conduct and make ethics a
clear and consistent element of their behavior, agendas, set standards and
goals (Northouse, 2004). Lastly, Pat focuses on hiring graduates with strong
analytical and ethical skills, which are important skills for both leaders and
credit analysts as individuals have to demonstrate expertise and knowledge in
the field.
Therefore, it is
possible that the increased turnover rate in the company is not attributed to
Pat’s recruitment and hiring criteria. Leadership has been found to be greatly
affected by personal factors of the individual; hence these could easily be
contributing to the leaving ((Northouse, 2004). Besides, leadership is affected
by other traits that cannot easily be assessed such as risk-taking and
originality in problem-solving, the capacity to structure social interaction
systems to the purpose at hand as well as readiness to absorb interpersonal
stress.
If Pat were to
change their recruitment practice, he would use hiring criteria that assess the
three-skill approach namely technical, human and conceptual skills.
